Trip Description:

Experience Moab Utah and the surrounding National Parks with other second-year students on this six day trip!  We will be tent camping for five nights at a group campsite.  The trip will include hiking in Arches National Park and the Needles District in Canyonlands National Park, a full day of outdoor rock climbing, and a full day of mountain biking. This trip is not only an opportunity to experience one of the most incredible parts of the country but also to connect with other second-year students. No prior outdoor experience required to apply for this trip. We will cover all necessary skills in our pre-trip meetings during the spring semester. Participants will learn about back country cooking, camping, safety, and Leave No Trace principles. Please take into consideration that we will have limited services throughout this trip (no showers, sinks, kitchens, etc.). We encourage you to consider your personal comfort level before applying.

Guidelines/Expectations for the Trip:

  • Participants MUST be a second year student in their fourth semester at Colorado State University.
  • Participants are expected to contribute to the group at all times. Participants must demonstrate a willingness to assist in group activities such as cooking, cleaning, setting up camp, as well as follow careful instructions provided by the trip leaders.
  • Participants are expected to connect with other students on the trip. We ask that participants get to know everyone in the group and reach out to each other. Maintaining a positive group environment where everyone feels comfortable is essential.
  • Participants must be open to the experience! Expand your comfort zone and be open to the adventure. The itinerary for this trip is strenuous and will require all participants to be motivated and maintain a positive attitude. Be mentally up for it all.
  • Be respectful of the environment. The desert is a very delicate eco-system and we will be taking extra precautions to preserve its integrity. We will be following Leave No Trace principles for the entirety of this trip. Damaging the landscape will not tolerated. We will go over this more in detail at pre-trip meetings.
  • Be fully present! We ask students leave their cell-phones behind or at least keep it on airplane mode for the trip. The goal is to be present and connect with each other.
  • While previous experience in the outdoors may be beneficial, this trip will be targeted towards beginners. We will be covering basic outdoor skills and competencies, as well as bonding as a group and learning about the Moab area. Participants with extensive outdoor experience should consider how they will contribute to the group in ways that foster learning and growth instead of hinder it.

There is grant funding available for students who are interested in participating but may have a financial need. If applying for grant funds, you must complete both the trip application and the grant application above. Grant applications must be turned into the OTP office in person by 5:00pm on January 24th or e-mailed directly to Courtney Conrad at courtney.conrad@colostate.edu.
